A major figure in post-Nouvelle Vague French cinema, Phillipe Garrel now stands accused of sexual assault and attempted sexual assault. Five women have come out of the woodworks, including actress Anna Mouglalis.
Garrel, 75, is refuting the accusations, but apologizes for having "hurt" some or "misinterpreted" their feelings, for a "inconisplaced or clumsy attempt at seduction", while also denying having assaulted these women.
The article, published by Mediapart, reveals the testimonies of five women, all actresses, "four of whom evoked non-consensual gestures and kisses". One of them, Laurence Cordier, had already mentioned these facts, anonymously, in an article published by Les Inrocks in October 2017.
This past March, Garrel won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival. His film “The Plough” was critically-acclaimed — so were his last few films which include “Jealousy,” “In the Shadows of Women” and “The Salt of Tears.”
