Paul Verhoeven to Direct ‘Sans Compter’ in France

August 23, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

In the latest issue of Premiere (France), producer Saïd Ben Saïd confirmed that his next project with Paul Verhoeven will be titled “Sans compter.”

The film is said to be an adaptation of Philippe Djian’s novel, published earlier this year. If you remember, Verhoeven adapted another Dijan novel (“Oh”) into the critically acclaimed 2016 feature “Elle.”

“Sans Compter” tells the story of Nathan, a journalist, fascinated by Gaby, his mother-in-law, a poet. The latter lives in the same vast estate property as Nathan and his wife. One day a promoter tries to buy parts of the land to build an amusement park and comes up against Gaby's categorical refusal, things get worse: a deputy gets annoyed, a hiker mysteriously disappears and Nathan unravels. The novel is told from Nathan’s, questionable, point of view.

Will this be Verhoeven’s next film? Yesterday, I had posted about The Cinemaholic claiming that the DC-set “Young Sinner,” billed as an erotic thriller, would be shot this September in Los Angeles. I was reluctant to believe that report, and even less so now.
