Notice how Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” hasn’t shown up at either TIFF or NYFF. This has led to some rumors that it might have its North American premiere at Telluride.
This would make sense, and so would a tribute award for Scorsese. If you remember, Annette Bening was supposed to be this year’s recipient for tribute honors, but those plans were nixed when the actors strike was greenlit.
So, why not just give it to Scorsese? The directors branch isn’t on strike, and his appearance would be a wonderful get for the festival’s 50th edition, which will run an extra day of screenings this year. Plus, ‘Killers’ does need a bit more exposure as it’s so far only screened at Cannes.
The 50th Telluride Film Festival is set to take place Friday to Monday, September 1st to 4th, 2023. As always, Michael Patterson’s blog is a wonderful way to catch up with the latest goings on of the event.
Based on the premiere designations from NYFF, TIFF and Venice, not to mention my own intel, these are the films that will likely premiere on Labor Day weekend at Telluride:
The Holdovers (Alexander Payne)
Saltburn (Emerald Fennell)
Poor Things (Yorgos Lanthimos)
The Royal Hotel (Kitty Green)
All Of Us Strangers (Andrew Haigh)
Rustin (George C. Wolfe)
Wildcat (Ethan Hawke)
Nyad (Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Jimmy Chin)
Fingernails (Christos Nikou)
The Bikeriders (Jeff Nichols)
El Conde (Pablo Larrain)
Janet Planet (Annie Baker)
The Promised Land
The Pigeon Tunnel (Errol Morris)
Daddio (Christy Hall)
They Shot the Piano Player (Trueba & Mariscal)
The American Buffalo (Ken Burns)
There are also, at least, 8 additional titles from Cannes and 1 from Berlin. Some of the usual suspects are listed below:
The Zone of Interest (Jonathan Glazer)
Anatomy of a Fall (Justine Trier)
Fallen Leaves (Aki Kaurismaki)
Perfect Days (Wim Wenders)
The Pot-au-Feu (Tran Anh Hung)
The Settlers (Felipe Galvez)
Occupied City (Steve McQueen)
Orlando, My Political Biography
In total, that’s 25 movies, we know of, that are going to Telluride. We’re missing around a dozen or so to complete the lineup. So, a few more surprises could be in store. I’m thinking “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Angelina Jolie’s “Without Blood” might show up here.
