Why was this ever greenlit?
I don’t know much about “Blue Beetle” from Warner Bros, I skipped both press screenings for the film this past week, and apparently no one else seems to care, either.
“Blue Beetle” nabbed $3 million in previews on Thursday, and took in less than $7 million on Friday. That’s $10 mil total. It’s facing a disastrous $20-25 million opening weekend, which, still, is better than last month’s projected $13-17 million.
Warner Bros still has “Barbie” killing it, with major legs, so maybe they’ll shrug off yet another bomb, but “Blue Beetle” underperforming follows fellow DC movie “The Flash” in terms of audience indifference. Warner Bros still has ‘Aquaman 2’ coming up in December.
“Blue Beetle,” received mixed reviews, but its B+ Cinemascore means audiences didn’t totally hate themselves for buying a ticket. I bet the movie goes to Warners’ Max streaming service next month.
Also of note, Universal’s “Strays” did much worse — just $3.4 million for Thursday plus Friday. Yikes. At least the budget for that one is just $46 million. “Blue Beetle” has a budget nearing $110 million. It stands to lose a lot of dough.
As mentioned, Warner Bros must be thanking their lucky stars that “Barbie” is nearing the $1.3 billion mark at the box-office. However, on its fifth weekend, Greta Gerwig’s movie will finally be dethroned by ‘Beetle, but barely.
