Here is the trailer for Pablo Larraín’s “El Conde.” It looks better than I thought. The beautiful images recall 1920s German Expressionism.
“El Conde” tackles a vampiric former dictator, inspired by former Chilean President Augusto Pinochet. Pinochet is not dead in the film, but an aged vampire who, after 250 years in this world, has decided to die once and for all, due to “ailments brought about by his dishonor and family conflicts”.
Of course, if you’re familiar with history, Pinochet led a military coup in the ‘70s and ruled the country until 1990. It’s an inspired twist to have him be an immortal vampire as his presence still haunts Chile to this day.
Frequent Larraín collaborator Guillermo Calderón co-wrote the feature with the filmmaker. Larraín’s filmography includes the likes of “Spencer,” “Jackie,” and “No.” Just to name a few. The film is set to arrive on Netflix September 15th.
