I warned you that ”Barbie” first reactions will be populated by influencers, quote whores and people you’ve never heard of. That’s what Warner Bros wanted and they got it in flying colors last night when the embargo lifted.
I mean, just look at last night’s reactions — who are these people? The only actual “critic” that’s weighed in is Collider’s Perri Nemiroff and, although she tends to like a lot of stuff, she’s not down with the movie:
There’s also NY Times awards writer Kyle Buchanan not really giving his opinion on the film, but tweeting out how amazed he was that Gerwig got away in making it:
“Further BARBIE thoughts to come but the number one is I can’t believe Greta Gerwig got away with it! (said admiringly) […] BARBIE is two hours of that! I was grinning and gobsmacked throughout… like how did she evade what must have been five binders full of executive notes.”
Otherwise, the people weighing in are unknowns. If you want to read some of these reactions, all raves, then you can find them here, here, here, here, here, here and here.
Hey, at least we have “Die Hart” and “Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight” filmmaker Ben Mekler liking “Barbie” it a lot.
All of this to say, I do believe the film will be getting good reviews, but why is Warner Bros preventing critics from being the first ones to react to “Barbie”? Also, with the exception of NYC, why are they press screening it at the exact same date and time as “Oppenheimer”?
We are four days away from reviews actually popping up. Warner Bros will be exclusively screening “Barbie” for NYC press later this week.
