On Friday, I was rather stunned by an Italian source telling me that Netflix is now thinking of bringing David Fincher’s “The Killer” to Venice.
This source told me, “negotiations are underway, Barbera did see it and he wants it in competition. I’m not sure if he will be able to get it as the odds are 50/50 right now since Netflix would rather premiere it closer to the November release.”
Instead of letting it go, I did what I usually do and started emailing around to those who might be in-the-know about such things. I got three answers, all of them unsure about the Netflix plans.
“I don’t think they know yet — sounds like tinkering is afoot…maybe NY?” — Festival Director
“Usually Fincher goes to NY. I doubt they will tell you. They’re being very quiet on the details.” — Awards Pundit
“I don’t believe it is settled yet.” — Trade Editor
The answer seems to be that there is no answer. Netflix hasn’t decided yet. They probably have no idea how to campaign this film, which is says to be very dark, but I’m telling you, if it’s as good as the early reactions I posted, then glowing reviews could definitely push this one forward.
I figured I should at least reach out to Netflix, which is what I did. They, obviousky, refused to comment on this story, why would they? It’s only July and they’re still probably shuffling their cards around as to what they should prioritize this awards season.
As we speak, the awards slate that Netflix has concocted for the fall includes Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” Pablo Larrain’s “El Conde,” Chin and Vasarhelyi‘s “Nyad” and Fincher’s “The Killer.”
Speaking of Venice, they’re not only courting the impossible with Fincher, but, as mentioned on Friday, are also trying hard for Miyazaki’s “How Do You Live?” Ghibli hasn’t budged yet, but who knows.
I’ll update this story if there are any developments.
