Roger Deakins has turned into a full-fledged fanboy of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman.” He’s made it very clear how much he loves this movie.
This past March, Deakins said “the best cinematography [of 2022] wasn’t Oscar-nominated. It’s “The Batman”. That’s the best work in my view.” Adding that the reason DP Greig Fraser’s “extraordinary” work wasn’t nominated was due to “pure and simple: snobbery”.
This week, Reeves was a guest on Deakins’ podcast and, of course, Deakins, again, couldn’t help but gush all over “The Batman”:
I’m really glad you did Batman because I’ve never been a fan of Batman until your film, and I’ve seen it probably 3 or 4 times now. I think it’s very moving, I love it. I connect with the characters. I connect with what you’re saying with it.
Batman seems like so precise, it seems so lit by all the sources that are in the shot. It seems so naturalistic and also seems so dark and one feels so anxious watching it. It does feel related to the real world, that sort of darkness of the city, the anxiety of it, society falling apart.
Principal photography on “The Batman: Part II”, previously planned for November, is now set to officially begin in March 2024. Robert Pattinson and Andy Serkis are confirmed to return, while Reeves will be back in the director’s chair. “Batman: Part II” is scheduled for release on October 3, 2025.
