Superhero movies seem to be at an influx point, bombing left and right these days, and it’s a wonderful sight to see. The catastrophe that is the Warner Bros/DC collaboration may take yet another bad turn next month.
What is “Blue Beetle”? Not sure. I’m not well-versed when it comes to comic book characters, but Warners had enough confidence to greenlight this bad boy with a $120 million budget.
Here comes the bad news. Early tracking, via BoxOffcePro.com, has the film earning $12-$17M domestically in its opening weekend, with a total domestic gross of just $27-$55M. Ouch.
The movie will need to to overperform internationally to avoid the gloomy fate of the last three DC superhero flicks (Shazam 2, The Flash, Black Adam). It probably won’t. Does Warners want to delay this one to 2024 and use the strike as an excuse? All reports are indicating that they would rather just dump it and get it over with.
The film, like many of the recent DCEU movies, has had reshoots, but, here’s the kicker, THR reports that the filmmakers requested two additional days of filming this past February but were turned down by the studio.
“Blue Beetle” has to do with a college graduate who returns to his hometown and is chosen to become a symbiotic host to an ancient alien relic that grants him a powerful exoskeleton armor. I’m not kidding. That’s the plot.
“Blue Beetle” is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on August 18, 2023
