Is Phoebe Waller-Bridge‘a Helena the heir-apparent to the ‘Indiana Jones’ franchise? Of late, there have been a lot of clues indicating that to be case.
At Cannes, I sounded the alarm about ‘Dial of Destiny,’ which heavily hints at Waller-Bridge donning the fedora and whip for the next film.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Waller-Bridge is basically hinting that this might very well be the direction that it’s headed, except that she just probably won’t be called Indiana Jones.
There’s no replacing Indiana Jones in any way. But I feel like the character herself—she did feel fresh on the page, and there is a sense of, is there room in the world for someone like this? So I do think there’s room for a slightly clumsier, bruised, limping female action star, maybe, in the future.
Is she delusional? Does she not see the iceberg coming? “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” will, in all likelihood,” underperform at the box-office this weekend. There is zero chance Disney greenlights her spin-off.
Waller-Bridge plays a feisty-grifter by the name of Helena Shaw, she is said to be the daughter of Toby Jones‘ Basil Shaw. Whenever Indy is in trouble, she comes to save the day. She’s a strong, spunky and fearless woman.
If Disney did decide to go down this creative direction, with the future of Indy in Waller-Bridges’ hands, then they would be committing commercial suicide. I’m sorry, there’s no other way to put it.
‘Dial of Destiny’ is projected to not do well this weekend at the box-office. Projections had it opening at around $60-65 million, but the latest numbers are hinting at an $8 million Thursday in previews, which could result in a lower-than-expected opening.
Potentially hammered down by the mixed reviews, ‘Indy 5’ will also have to contend with its ballooned budget of $300 million. If the worst case scenario does occur, and ‘Indy 5’ bombs, does Disney still go ahead with successor Waller-Bridge?
