With the release of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” and the downfall of Pixar, I guess it was a good time for IndieWire to release their list of The 60 Best Animated Movies of the 21st Century.
‘Across the Spider-Verse’ is actually #2 on their list, right behind Hayao Miyazaki’s “Spirited Away” (also my #1). However, ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ is in the top 5? I don’t approve. Also, “WALL-E” at #17? Sacrilege!
Ever since “Toy Story” emerged in 1995, there’s been a fierce animated rivalry between various studios, which each of them trying to one-up the other with every release. That’s kind of stopped in recent years. It was a great time to be an animation fan.
My list would go something like this —
(1) Spirited Away (2) WALL-E (3) The Fantastic Mr. Fox (4) Ratatouille (5) The Wind Rises (6) Waltz With Bashir (7) Toy Story 3 (8) Persepolis (9) Triplets of Belleville (10) Across the Spider-Verse
