Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” is test-screening, yet again, this week in the West Coast.
Hey, maybe “Maestro” will turn out okay in the end, but current word of mouth isn’t filled with praise. They’re also editing this film to death which is why these test screenings keep happening.
It will have test-screened four times, two different versions, including a brand new cut of the film post-reshoots. The gist I got from early reactions was that it was incredibly well-directed and acted, but the pacing was very off.
I’m fairly certain it’ll be going to the Toronto Film Festival in September, not too sure about Venice (maybe an out of competition slot). Other than that, it’s wait and see.
The film, which spans 30 years, is said to focus more on Leonard Bernstein's relationship with his wife Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan) than it does on his music.
There is a lot of buzz for “Maestro”. Last week, Variety ranked it #1 in their early Best Picture predictions. If I had to make a similar list, I don’t think it’d even be in my top ten.
Netflix desperately wants this one to be a Best Picture nominee — they don’t have much of an awards season slate this fall. As it stands, their hot fall titles will probably be “Maestro,” “The Killer,” “Nyad” “Rustin” and “The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar.”
