Here’s a trailer that’ll get shared an innumerable amount of times this afternoon, especially on Reddit.
During the thick of the COVID-19 hysteria, in January 2021, a short squeeze of the stock of video game retailer GameStop, by a group of Redditors, stunned the world.
Now, of course they have made a film out of this insane story. Set to screen this Fall, Craig Gillespie‘s “Dumb Money” will try to make sense of what happened. The story isn’t even two years old, but Hollywood has worked at breakneck speed to deliver this one. Next thing you know, we’ll have a film next year about the recent Titanic tragedy.
The film is based on Ben Mezrich‘s 2021 book “The Antisocial Network,” it stars Paul Dano as Keith Gill, a guy who decided to invest his entire life savings into GameStop stock and post about it on Reddit. This kickstarted a domino effect for the ages.
Here’s the official synopsis for “Dumb Money”:
Dumb Money is the ultimate David vs. Goliath tale, based on the insane true story of everyday people who flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop (yes, the mall videogame store) into the world’s hottest company. In the middle of everything is regular guy Keith Gill (Paul Dano), who starts it all by sinking his life savings into the stock and posting about it. When his social posts start blowing up, so does his life and the lives of everyone following him. As a stock tip becomes a movement, everyone gets rich – until the billionaires fight back, and both sides find their worlds turned upside down.
The film stars Dano, Pete Davidson, Vincent D’Onofrio, America Ferrera, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley, and Seth Rogen.
Gillespie is the filmmaker behind “I, Tonya,” “Lars and the Real Girl,” “Cruella” and the HULU series “Pam & Tommy.” He’s competent enough, but it’s quite clear he’s trying to make his own ‘Big Short’ with this one.
“Dumb Money” hits theaters on September 22, via Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Releasing.
