It was a mistake on the Disney’s part to premiere “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” at the Cannes Film Festival.
The reviews were mixed and now the film has weeks of mediocre buzz before it launches on June 30th. I’m not sure how this one can be saved.
The film could also be looking at an underwhelming box office, at least based on what analysts are predicting. ‘Indy 5’ is currently tracking at a $60 million to $70 million over a five-day holiday opening.
The 5-day opening is down from the $151.9M opening for 2008’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” ‘Indy 5’ currently sits at 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Disney PR machine needs to be cranked up a notch, but I don’t think this one will be saved.
I have a hard time seeing it earning $200 million domestically, overseas grosses will have to be very good for it to break even. Remember, the budget for ‘Indy 5’ is a ridiculous $294 million! This ranks it as the 7th most expensive movie ever made.
What’s astonishing about this whole debacle is how confident Disney was on the finished product, so much so that they decided to screen it at Cannes more than six weeks before its release.
Star Harrison Ford is 81 — is it any wonder that there are doubts if this could actually be pulled off? Ford isn’t out-of-shape in the least bit, but, he is set to become the oldest action star at the movies.
Filmmaker James Mangold’s 153-minute sequel will be released in theaters on June 30th.
