In a recent interview, filmmaker Damián Szifron confirmed that his next two projects would be a film titled “The Simulators” and, more curiously, a sequel to “Wild Tales”, which, for now, he is calling “Wild Planet.”
Last year, Vertical Entertainment picked up his latest film, “To Catch A Killer”, a psychological thriller. The film starred Shailene Woodley and Ben Mendelsohn and was released this last April to mixed reviews.
Set in Baltimore on New Year’s Eve, Woolley played a talented but troubled police officer (Woodley) recruited by the FBI’s chief investigator (Mendelsohn) to help profile and track down a mass murderer.
It had its moments, but was bogged down by a bad ending. There were rumors that “To Catch A Killer” had been submitted for last year’s edition of Cannes, but it was ubiquitously absent from the official selection.
Szifron’s “Wild Tales” was one of the major highlights of Cannes 2014. It consisted of six short stories, tackling the extremities of human behavior and what happens when people are pushed to the brink. I highly recommend it, five of the six stories work viciously well.
The film was also a surprise indie hit in the United States, grossing over $3 million. It’s worldwide gross was a very impressive $44 million.
