Matt Reeves confirmed on the Roger Deakins’ podcast that Greig Fraser will be returning as the director of photography for “The Batman: Part II.
Fraser shot the hell out of that film, it was quite possibly the best-looking Batman movie ever made. Fraser’s other DP credits include “Dune,” “Foxcatcher,” “Killing Them Softly,” “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Vice.”
This past March, when asked what was his pick to win the Cinematography Oscar, Deakins said “the best cinematography [of 2022] wasn’t Oscar-nominated. It’s “The Batman”. That’s the best work in my view.”
Deakins raved about Fraser’s “extraordinary” work in Matt Reeves’ movie, adding “the reason it wasn’t [nominated] is pure and simple: snobbery. There’s this unfair tendency to avoid the Marvel/DC universe and the other popular universes.”
Another work, according to Deakins, that should have been nominated was Claudio Miranda’s photography in “Top Gun: Maverick” — “It comes down to the work. Good work is good work whatever the genre,” he added.
Principal photography on “The Batman: Part II”, previously planned for November, will now only officially begin in March 2024. We also know that London will again be the main location for production.
Robert Pattinson and Andy Serkis are confirmed to return, while Matt Reeves will be back in the director’s chair. “Batman: Part II” is scheduled for release on October 3, 2025.
