We finally have a trailer for Ethan Coen’s “Drive-Away Dolls” and it gives off vibes reminiscent of “Burn After Reading” and “Raising Arizona”.
The visuals definitely look Coen-esque, ditto the humor, characters and dialogue. Hopefully it results into it something good. We desperately need a quality Coen flick right about now.
After Joel and Ethan, surprisingly, parted ways in 2019, they embarked on their own solo projects. Joel directed 2021’s “The Tragedy of MacBeth” and now we have “Drive-Away Dolls.” The latter looks to be done more in their iconic style.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Written by Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke, this comedy caper follows Jamie, an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way. Directed by Ethan Coen.
The cast assembled for Coen’s film is great: Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp and Matt Damon.
Cinematographer Ari Wegner (The Power of the Dog) is lensing Coen's solo debut. Coen and his wife Tricia Cooke initially wrote the screenplay in the mid-2000s, which is said to be a “Russ Meyer-inspired romp” that was initially supposed to be directed by Allison Anders (“Gas Food Lodging”).
No word yet on where this one will be premiering. At the very least, we’re looking at a TIFF bow, I haven’t heard anything about Venice yet, but that would be the most ideal launch point for Coen’s film.
“Drive-Away Dolls” is set to be released in theaters nationwide on September 22nd.
