We haven’t heard this name in a while.
It’s been six years since Kathryn Bigelow released her last film, “Detroit.” It turns out the Oscar-winning filmmaker has already started shooting her next project, this one titled “Smuggler.”
Cinematographer Arseni Khachatura revealed the news on Instagram. However, let’s not jump the gun just yet — I have no idea whether this is a feature film, TV series or even just an ad, but she’s alive!
I’ll try to dig in and find out more about this one. Expect an update soon. What should be added is that Khachatura was the DP on “Beginning,” “Bones and All,” and, most recently, “The Idol.”
Last year, it was reported that Bigelow would direct an adaptation of screenwriter David Koepp’s novel “Aurora.” It’s been over a year since that announcement, but I haven’t heard any new developments about it.
Bigelow is the maverick filmmaker of such films as “The Hurt Locker,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” Near Dark,” “Point Break,” and the highly underrated “Strange Days.”
As mentioned, “Detroit” was her last film and it garnered a mixed reception when it was released back in 2017. I liked most of that film, but the last third of that movie just didn’t work for me. Nevertheless, it was unfairly maligned by critics.
Let’s hope this is indeed Bigelow’s comeback.
