An NME piece about the financial prospects of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" claims that it might "bomb" at the box office.
I already wrote about this. Yes, the early forecast is very grim for ‘Indy 5,’ which is predicted to make $60 million in its first five days of release. Maybe around $40 million from Friday to Sunday. That is indeed very weak, given that the film cost almost $300 million to make.
What some don’t realise is that ‘Indiana Jones’ is a much bigger brand overseas. I bet international receipts will be much greater than the domestic tally. But will it be enough?
With that being said, there is almost no way that Disney makes its money back with this one. It was a mistake to premiere it at Cannes, where it garnered bad reviews, because the post-Cannes reviews have been a little more favourable. The last six reviews added to Rotten Tomatoes have been all positive.
Viewer Anon sums it up perfectly:
"I've talked to a few people who swear to me that Indiana Jones and the Diary of Destiny is fantastic, and they think the early negative reviews are insane. So I'm still holding onto hope that this ends up being a helluva crowdpleaser."
Analysts are also suggesting that the upcoming sequel is more likely to appeal to an older audience, so the mediocre early numbers do make sense in the context that ‘Indy’ has lost its younger demographic, especially with an 81-year-old star at the helm of this one.
