The news keeps getting worse for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” The $300 million budgeted film is being unleashed in theaters this afternoon.
Word on the street is that it’s actually going to have a worse Thursday than “The Flash.” At least that’s what the latest projections are saying about James Mangold’s 154 minute sequel.
A $7.5 million Thursday is not good at all. Especially when you take into account that it’s one of the most expensive movies ever made. It’ll have to overperform internationally, by a lot, to make its money back.
Compared to ‘Indy 5,’ “The Flash,” grossed $9.7 million on its first Thursday and its budget was around $70 million lower than Mangold’s film. Yet, you still have people saying “The Flash” will become one of the all-time box-office bombs. Where does that leave ‘Indy 5’?
Moviegoers were so disappointed by 2008’s “Kingdom of Crystal Skull” that they seem to have been completely turned off by the entire franchise. Then again, if ‘Dial of Destiny’ was actually getting good reviews then maybe that would have helped it make more money.
I know, it’s a real shocker, audiences are not willing to pay their hard-earned money to watch an 81-year-old actor lead an action movie. It doesn’t help that Ford’s co-star, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, is not that big of a name to draw more butts into seats.
The Kathleen Kennedy curse continues. It seems as though any film will her name stamped on as a producer turns toxic.
