Last week, in an in-depth interview with Le Monde, Quentin Tarantino described the lead character of his upcoming “The Movie Critic” as closely resembling Travis Bickle.
However, we missed this tidbit from Tarantino’s Q&A at Cannes. In it, the filmmaker confessed that his lead character was a combination of Howard Stern and a film-critic version of Travis Bickle, Tarantino emphasized the critic's cynical yet witty approach.
Think about Travis's diary entries. But the magazine critic was very, very funny. He was very rude, you know. He used bad words. But he was really funny. He was rude as hell.
I originally thought the film would be based on ‘70s Hollywood Press film critic Bill Marigold, but signs are now pointing towards it actually being Marigold’s colleague at that same paper, one Jim Sheldon.
The film is set to shoot in the fall. It will not be affected by the writers strike, so, fingers crossed, it’s smooth sailing from here and a cast announcement is coming soon.
