If any Martin Scorsese fans who, for one reason or another, had hesitations about the quality of his new film, I can safely say this: rest easy.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” was screened in Paris for very select press last week. You needed to present a very strict proof of ID and your VIP invite to attend this exceptional screening.
I’ve spoken to two separate people who attended, both film critics, and they believe it to be a great movie. There was no hesitation. I’m almost certain Scorsese has a winner here. The people they spoke to after the screening were in agreement.
Here’s a small reaction, translated:
I believe it is a bravura piece of filmmaking in all areas, and with a social consciousness, as the book was, at its heart.
Of course, the French tend to abide by auteur cinema, through thick and thin — Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” has been their best-reviewed movie of the decade so far. But there’s something about these reactions that makes me believe that ‘Killers’ is going to be something very special.
The film is said to have a triptych of leads: DiCaprio, Plemons and De Niro. There’s isn’t just one central performance. Lily Gladstone is said to compliment them very well in a powerfully resonant performance.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” is set to screen at the Cannes Film Festival on May 20th. As of today, it’s the only screening for press. There will be no other opportunity to see it. It is almost guaranteed that plenty of people will be shut out in trying to get a ticket.
The goal is to watch ‘Killers’ on the 20th at 7pm, exit the theater, write my review, publish it and then attend the 11pm screening of Todd Haynes’ “May/December.”
