Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” is not screening at Cannes, now it’s actually rumoured to premiere at Venice.
We have some new info about the film via a Vogue interview promoting Sofia's new book. What intrigues me the most about this interview is that Sofia describes “Priscilla” as “Marie Antoinette in Graceland.” Bring it.
It’s very much a story about Priscilla becoming who she is and figuring out her own sense of womanhood. She easily could’ve stayed in the role of Mrs. Elvis Presley, but she chose to find her own way. She experienced so many of the same things every young woman does but in such a grand environment—similar to Marie.
When I was shooting Priscilla there were a lot of moments that reminded me of other movies I’d made. There were a few moments where I thought, Oh God, am I just repeating myself? Is this too much like Marie Antoinette? But I’m self-aware enough to be okay with that now.
Some on-set photos leaked had leaked in the Spring. They showed Elvis and Priscilla Presley, husband and wife, strolling outdoors. The film is based on the memoir “Elvis and Me” by Priscilla Presley. It stars Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as Priscilla and Elvis.
“Priscilla” wrapped its production in December. Coppola is said to have started post on the film in January.
Born Priscilla Ann Wagner in 1945, she was 14 when she met 24-year-old Elvis during his military service in Germany. They ended up getting married in 1967, and had one daughter, the late Lisa Marie Presley.
A24 will distribute “Priscilla”. Coppola is reteaming with her longtime collaborators, including Cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, and Editor Sarah Flack.
