Taika Waititi just keeps piling up the projects.
He, supposedly, might, maybe, still make a “Star Wars” film in the near future. Not to mention a live-action remake of “Flash Gordon“ and his adaptation of anime classic “Akira.”
We can add another sci-fi project to his ever-growing list — Deadline reports that Waititi is in talks to direct a feature adaptation of “Klara & The Sun,” a sci-fi novel from Kazuo Ishiguro (“Never Let Me Go“). It is said to be Waititi’s next film.
Dahvi Waller (“Mrs. America“) penned the original draft of the script, with Waititi, potentially, rewriting some, or all of it. Below is the novel’s official synopsis via Penguin Random House:
“Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her.”
Ishiguro and Waititi don’t quite gel in my books. On paper, it’s one of the weirder director/author partnerships in recent years.
Guillermo del Toro is currently working on a stop-motion animated adaptation of Ishiguro’s “The Buried Giant” for Netflix. Also, if you remember, a wonderful adaptation of Ishiguro’s “The Remains of the Day” was turned into a film back in 1993.
Waititi’s upcoming sports comedy “Next Goal Wins” will be in theaters on November 17.
