As Steve McQueen was presenting his 246 minute doc “Occupied City,” moderator Thierry Fremaux kinda spilled the beans about next year’s Cannes competition.
Fremaux mentioned in the Q&A that “Blitz” will likely premiere in Cannes competition in 2024. I presume he hasn’t even seen the film yet since it recently wrapped shooting in London and McQueen is currently knee-deep in post-production work on his WWII epic.
So, we can scratch this one off of our 2024 predictions.
“Blitz” stars Saoirse Ronan and is based on McQueen’s own original idea which takes place during the German bombing campaign against the United Kingdom in 1940.
With a resume that includes “Hunger,” “Shame” and “12 Years a Slave” (all excellent) it’s always exciting to find out what former-visual-artist-turned-director McQueen will do next.
Fremaux admitted that if the 2020 pandemic-cancelled of Cannes had gone on as planned, then McQueen would have had two films in competition: “Lovers Rock” and “Mangrove.”
“Blitz” is being produced by Apple TV.
