An afternoon screening of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” took place in a few cities yesterday, including Los Angeles.
According to a person I spoke to, the pre-teenage crowd was allowed to enter, some as young as 11 or 12. The film doesn’t yet have an MPAA rating. Rumor is that two cuts were tested yesterday, one was aiming for a PG rating and the other was PG-13. The former seemed more geared towards kids and families.
RELEASE THE SUBVERSIVE CUT!
According to sources, the film looks just about done. No further effects work is needed.
The reactions seem to be carbon copies of the last one: For the most part positive, with some, very few, not that engaged by the real world scenes. However, from what I’ve gathered, it’s been another successful screening for “Barbie.” It’s a comedic crowd pleaser.
The scenes that take place in Barbieland are the highlights. The ending keeps getting mentioned as a real whopper, everybody loves the way this film ends. Margot Robbie is also perfectly cast.
Ryan Gosling is again being cited as completely stealing the movie from everyone else around him. Again, people are saying he deserves an Oscar nomination for the “Ken-ergy” he brings to the screen. Some are even flouting critics awards.
Michael Cera, in particular, has this one scene that will be talked about to no ends. Kate McKinnon’s role seems to be a love it or hate it kind of thing. Ditto America Ferrara. John Cena is “flat-out hilarious” as the Merman.
I’ll keep updating if I get any other reactions. “Barbie” will be in theaters on July 21st.
