Tomorrow Steve McQueen’s “Occupied City” screens. The official runtime is 4 hours 26 minutes. It could have been much longer. McQueen tells IndieWire’s Eric Kohn he shot 36 hours worth of material, nine times more than the final cut. The doc is said to pair footage of modern-day Amsterdam with “dry narration” by performance artist Melanie Hyams about the Nazi persecution of the Jews that took place. “It needed to be a journey so you get to know the city,” McQueen says. “The subject has to fit the form.”
