Has Longoria shown any ability to direct? She made one movie about Cheetos and now calls herself a director.
The above quote is auteur Longoria whining about how only white men can direct big-budgeted flops and make another film.
Longoria continued, “The problem is if this movie fails, people go, ‘Oh Latino stories don’t work…female directors really don’t cut it.’ We don’t get a lot of at-bats.”
Earth to Eva, most white men can’t either.
Plus, she chose her directing debut to be about a guy who invented a new flavor of Cheetos. The guy turned out to be a liar, so her movie isn’t even based on fact.
Yes, most of $200 million budgeted films were made by white guys who did indeed get another, or several, more chances. However, most of them had a track record, a history of making successful films, it’s not the only thing they’ve ever done.
It’s also worth mentioning that most filmmakers are white guys, so, of course, most of the directors getting second chances are going to be part of that demographic. Hollywood’s diversity problem is part of this, but that’s really the point that Longoria is making here.
