Artificial Intelligence is a timely topic these days, which means you’re going to be getting a lot of films tackling it. Here’s one that’s being released four months from now.
“The Creator” stars John David Washington as the last hope for mankind after A.I. detonates a nuclear warhead on Los Angeles. The trailer was released earlier this month.
The film is directed by Gareth Edwards (“Rogue One,” “Godzilla”), who co-wrote the script with Chris Weitz. The cast includes Washington, Gemma Chan, Allison Janney, Ken Watanabe, and Sturgill Simpson.
A test-screening occured last night with Edwards in attendance. This audience member dug it:
Movie is pretty much finished outside of a few minor VFX here are there and a score. Runtime clocks in at about 135 min. Feels very much like Edwards getting to finally do what he wanted to with Rogue One. Huge scope with globe-trotting energy and a strong emotional core. The original title “TRUE LOVE” makes a lot of sense. Lots of bit players throughout but it’s very much the John David Washington show and I think it’s the best display of his range we’ve gotten. Real sad sack of a character that gets a really rewarding evolution over the course of the film. Surprisingly sparse on action even though it’s basically a chase film. Has two absolutely massive battle sequences and that’s about it. Feels like it’s definitely primed for a TIFF world premiere. Has some big “Arrival” and “Ad Astra” energy. The crowd last night was eating it up. And as for myself, I loved it. I think it’s his most accomplished work to date.
The official synopsis hints at a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence. Washington plays ex-special forces. He’s recruited to hunt down and kill The Creator, an architect of advanced A.I. who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end mankind. The mission takes place in AI-occupied territory.
Edwards directed what was, probably, the best Star Wars movie since Disney took over the rights to the franchise. His 2014 tackling of “Godzilla” wasn’t bad either.
“The Creator” premieres September 29 in theaters from 20th Century Studios.
