Russell Crowe was a guest on Barstool Sports’ podcast and let it slip that a sequel to Shane Black’s “The Nice Guys” might happen.
Crowe admits that he spoke to co-star Ryan Gosling about doing “The Nice Guys 2” and that they were even workshopping titles.
“We wanted to call it ‘Nice Guys: The Mexican Detectives’. Bang! It’s me & Ryan, somehow we’ve got to pretend we’re Mexican detectives.”
Black hasn’t made a movie since 2018’s “The Predator,” which was a strange addition to a filmography that otherwise had a very distinctive voice to it.
Black is known to mix black comedy with strong action (and tends to set his films during Christmas time). His screenplays include “Lethal Weapon” “The Last Boy Scout” and “The Long Kiss Goodnight.” His notable directorial efforts are “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” and ‘Nice Guys.’
“The Nice Guys” played very nicely as a double-feature to Black's “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang,” which was mashup of all the buddy cop cliches thrown into a self-referential bucket of witty urban hipster wisdom.
Gosling and Crowe had great chemistry. There is no sequel without both of them signing up for it. The film has amassed a cult following over the years and will have a large enough fanbase to get greenlit.
Black also needs a comeback, his ‘Predator’ movie was plagued by reshoots and the stripping of his creative freedom. It ended up garnering negative reviews and made just $51 million domestically.
