Abdellatif Kechiche will be shooting his next film in Sète this summer, according to that city's cinema management.
The Franco-Tunisian filmmaker has many connections to the island which has already served as the setting for several of his previous films: “La Graine et le Mulet” and the ‘Mektoub’ trilogy.
The filmmaker, who currently resides in his native Tunisia, will be arriving to Sète in the coming weeks to carry out location scouting, particularly in the municipal premises of the Itinerant School, quai des Moulins.
There had been rumors last year that Kechiche was preparing a new project. A famous French actress is said to be the lead of this secretive new film, which will be the eight of his career.
Last time we saw a film from Kechiche was at Cannes 2018, when “Mektoub, My love: Intermezzo” shocked the Croisette.
Kechiche seemed to have regrets regarding the film being shown at Cannes (when the film was "not finished, not mixed, not totally color-corrected"). Kechiche also revealed that if he knew at the time that the principal actors would boycot the screening, he would not have screened it. The sexually explicit 210 minute film has still not been released anywhere.
Kechiche is currently still editing the final two films of his ‘Mektoub’ trilogy, (Canto Duo and Canto 3), but there has still been no indication that they will be released anytime soon.
It’s honestly such a sad state of affairs when a talented filmmaker like him can’t seem to get anything going due to cancel culture. Every year, as Cannes approaches, people wonder if the third ‘Mektoub’ will be part of the lineup. Maybe this year?
