The box-office continued on its momentum this weekend. People are back in theaters, but for the IP stuff, we’re all still wondering if the arthouse is dying.
Regardless, in four days, “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” with Chris Pine, made $38.5 million. A lot of people are enjoying it, what with its A- CinemaScore and 89% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Jonathan M. Goldstein, John Francis Daley directed this ‘Dungeons and Dragons,’ and they’re responsible for the excellent “Game Night.” So, the sense of humor that many of these reviews are praising shouldn’t be that surprising.
For some reason, I was invited to a press screening of the film last Saturday afternoon . Weekend showings rarely happen for critics. I couldn’t make it. Maybe I’ll buy a ticket for this one later this week.
I wrote yesterday about the bomb that is ‘Shazam 2,’ but another one is still playing in theaters: Adam Driver’s “65,” which has made just $30 million in its four-week-run. Not counting marketing costs, the film’s budget is said to be around $50 million. A Rare flop for Driver.
“65” was shot in 2020 and was actually test-screened in 2021. Reactions were all over the place at the time. Sony actually had a test-screening of it just a week before its release in March. Here’s the kicker: two versions of the movie, in two auditoriums, were shown.
It was doomed to fail.
The film was written, directed, and produced by “A Quiet Place” screenwriters Scott Beck & Bryan Woods and produced by Sam Raimi.
