This is a real surprise.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” was spitballed for a Cannes premiere, then it didn’t show up when the lineup was revealed. What happened?
Now Searchlight have dated the film for a September 8th release date. That means probably no TIFF, but Venice is still very much a possibility.
It doesn’t sound like Searchlight has much Oscar hopes with this one. They’re releasing it very early in the season. What gives? Contenders are usually released in October and November. Maybe this one just isn’t very accessible to the Academy.
Some readers had been wondering what was been going on with “Poor Things” and why it’s been delayed for this long, but at least we now know when it’ll be released.
The film, starring Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo, and inspired by story of “Frankenstein,” wrapped production in late fall of 2021. It’s been a long time coming. Why was “Poor Things” delayed for this long? My best guess was that it was probably a combination of Searchlight having had too many 2022 movies and post-production visual effects taking a lengthy time to complete.
Or, maybe not.
Regardless, three new photos have been released. You can find them below. They do look stunning.
