Last week, insider Jeff Sneider reported, via his Hot Mic podcast, that Netflix desperately wanted David Fincher to direct a US version of their hit series “Squid Game.”
Well, it turns out that, according to Sneider, Fincher has finally agreed to tackle the project. What a strange development. It’s an odd pairing to say the least, but it could work only for the fact that, much like many of Fincher’s best films, ‘Squid Game’ deals with psychological violence.
Let us remember, Fincher has taken on numerous different projects over the years that ended up never getting made. He’s known to bail on things at the flick of a switch.
Whatever happened to “Strangers on A Train”? “World War Z II”? “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”? “Jobs”? “The Girl Who Played With Fire”?
It’s a chronic problem for Fincher. He gets cold feet and bails. However, let’s say he’s dead-serious about directing an American remake of “Squid Game,” Fincher tackling the ultra popular South Korean series would be such a risky endeavour.
Not just that, but the second season of ‘Squid Game’ has already been shot and ready for release. Not to mention Netflix has greenlit a spin-off series as well. They’re milking ‘Squid’ to the very end.
For the time being, Fincher has “The Killer” being released in November via Netflix.
