During the pandemic, “Extraction” became the most-watched film in Netflix history.
In my mixed review, I mentioned how it played like a “no-plot-all-action manifesto.” Indeed, “Extraction” survived solely on its action scenes, shot on location in India by DP Newton Thomas Sigel. This included a breathlessly exciting 12-minute one-take chase through the streets of Dhaka.
Producers Joe and Anthony Russo spoke to Collider about the upcoming Netflix sequel, simply titled “Extraction 2,” and again starring Chris Hemsworth.
During the interview, the Russos confirmed that there will be a 14-minute continuous take in the sequel. The specific details of this oner are still being kept under wraps, but Joe alluded to the fact that it "may" involve a helicopter.
This oner seems to have been briefly featured in the “Extraction 2” trailer which had Hemsworth’s character in the middle of a chaotic prison riot with police officers and convicts — from what we could see, expect snow, grenades, fire, bricks, and lots of fighting.
Credit must go to director Sam Hargrave for attempting these ambitious sequences. He was Captain America and Thor’s stunt-double during the last phase of the MCU. That helps.
During some of the action scenes in the first “Extraction,” Hargrave strapped himself to the front of a camera car to capture the jolting effect of the action scenes. I guess that’s the advantage you get when the director of your film is also a stunt man.
Hargrave is back for this sequel. The screenplay was written by Joe Russo. Netflix premieres “Extraction 2” on June 16.
