‘Furiosa’ Takes Place 15 Years Before ‘Fury Road’

December 6, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

Last week, the trailer for George Miller’s “Furiosa” was released online.

It looked visually assertive, but John Seale’s photography will clearly be missed this time around. Seale came out of retirement for 2015’s “Fury Road,” but opted to not return for “Furiosa.”

We don’t know much about the plot of “Furiosa” except that it will tackle the titular character’s rise in the ranks of Immortan Joe’s hierarchy, years before Furiosa would rebel against her boss.

Speaking at Brazil’s CCXP event, Miller confirmed that “Furiosa” takes place "15 years directly before Fury Road, and [...] runs straight into it.

It’s really the story of Furiosa and how she got to there. So alot of the film will be familiar, a lot of it is new - unseen before.

As for a possible appearance from Max himself, Miller stays mum about it, adding that “Max is lurking around somewhere around this story”. If he does show up, will Max be played by Tom Hardy? Mel Gibson? Or a new actor?

It’s going to be damn-near impossible for Miller’s “Furiosa” to be as jaw-dropping as “Fury Road,” but I’m optimistic about this prequel to the 2015 action classic. Miller and Max are a match made in cinematic heaven. If you remember, ‘Fury Road’ also premiered at Cannes — it ended up being one of the most memorable (and now legendary) screenings on the Croisette, in recent memory.

Principal photography on “Furiosa” began June 1, 2022, in Australia, and wrapped last October. According to IMDb, the budget is $168 million. The cost of “Mad Max: Fury Road” was around the same, with estimations ranging between $154-185 million.

“Furiosa” stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke. It’s set to be released in theaters on May 24, 2024.
