The rumor du jour is a blockbuster. There have been whispers that Tom Cruise is ready to shoot a sequel to “Top Gun: Maverick.” The tentative plan is for a 2025 production start.
No casting has been made. I’m hearing a script has not been written either. However, this sequel is very much being eyed by Paramount. Now, whether it all comes together is the big question mark.
Cruise is currently shooting ‘Mission: Impossible 8’ and director Joseph Kosinski will be spending most of next year working on his Formula One movie, starring Brad Pitt. Otherwise, I’m hearing that the ‘Maverick’ sequel could very well be next for both of them.
From what has been said, Cruise has put an ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ sequel on the backburner, for now. The script they have needs to be completely rewritten Also, Cruise’s movie with director Doug Liman, shot in space, doesn’t seem to be moving much these days. Other than those two projects, I don’t believe Cruise has anything else in development.
“Top Gun: Maverick” made $1.4B dollars worldwide, and that’s without a China release. It was a wildly popular cultural event that brought audiences back to theaters during the pandemic.
I don't think there's any way the heads at Paramount aren't constantly on the phone with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Cruise about a third film.
To many, ‘Maverick’ was the perfect sequel and wrap up, and there is no "need" for a third film, but it would be highly unusual for Hollywood to not produce another film in the franchise, and it looks as though it is now being developed.
