More from Schrader’s Le Monde interview.
It’s been long-rumored that Quentin Tarantino’s “The Movie Critic” would rework scenes from Schrader’s “Rolling Thunder”, but it looks like other ‘70s classics will be reshot for the film:
“Quentin will insert extracts from films from the 1970s. And he will also make his own versions of films from that era. He asked my permission to shoot the ending of [Rolling Thunder], by John Flynn, as I had written it in the original screenplay—before it was completely rewritten and watered down.”
We don’t know much about “The Movie Critic,” set to shoot, hopefully, next year, but Schrader’s comments more or less lead us to believe that Tarantino’s recent book, “Cinema Speculation,” is an inspiration for his 10th and final film. In the book, Tarantino talks, at length, about “Rolling Thunder.”
What we do know for sure is that “The Movie Critic” is set in Los Angeles, circa 1977, and the lead protagonist is “Travis Bickle if he were a film critic”. A loner, isolated individual, who happens to review movies for an underground porno magazine.
