We are anticipating John Waters’ “Liarmouth,” which is set to be the filmmaker’s first film in almost 20 years.
The project was announced in 2022 and the strikes seem to have delayed it a bit, but Waters has now given us an update on the film. It turns out that he’s submitted the script and a budget is currently being assembled:
I’ve written the script and I turned it in and they like it and we’re doing a budget,” he said. “Who knows? We’ll see. We’ll see.
The good news is that the project is indeed moving ahead. We hope this one goes into production in 2024, but there’s obviously no guarantee. Casting still need to be made.
“Liarmouth,” based on Waters’ own novel, follows con artist Marsha Sprinkle, who is described as “a suitcase thief, scammer, and master of disguise. Dogs and children hate her. Her own family wants her dead. She’s smart, she’s desperate, she’s disturbed, and she’s on the run with a big chip on her shoulder. They call her Liarmouth―until one insane man makes her tell the truth.”
In 2022, Aubrey Plaza told Dazed that she was going to audition for “Liarmouth.” Oh, please let this happen. Plaza in a John Waters movie is just what the doctor ordered.
As mentioned, this will be Waters’ first film in almost two decades. His last creation was 2004’s “A Dirty Shame.” Waters is the iconoclast filmmaker behind “Pink Flamingos,” “Polyester,” “Serial Mom,” and “Hairspray.” This world needs a new John Waters movie.
