I’m not sure what the deal is with “The Color Purple” at the box-office, but I’ve never seen anything quite like it before.
On Christmas Day, the film amassed a record-setting $18 million in box-office receipts. The following day it fell close to 70% and grossed $7 million and on Wednesday it fell even more and just made a measly $3 million.
Meanwhile, “Wonka” ($8M) and “Aquaman 2” ($6M) are sustaining the momentum. It would be rather strange if ‘Color Purple’ plummets again on Thursday. Warner Bros has to expect some kind of audience boost for this $100 million costing film as it showed some real commercial promise on Christmas Day.
Maybe this is just a case of the film being extremely frontloaded — it’s certainly not breaking out outside of its core demographic. Word of mouth has been good, with an A CinemaScore and 95% user rating on RT.
