So, this is interesting. Michael Mann’s “Ferrari” was initially planned to go direct to streaming on Showtime. The decision to go theatrical only came after a bidding war happened between A24 & NEON, with the latter winning for $15 million. Watching “Ferrari,” you can see why STX might have wanted this one to go the streaming route. That is not a diss on the film, which I quite liked, but more about how the artfully realized “Ferrari,” which cost $90 million, is a very hard sale for mainstream audiences. Mann’s racecar drama is currently struggling at the box-office, it only made $2.8 million on Christmas Day, finishing at #11.
