So, the day after Christmas, “The Color Purple” fell 60% and made $7 million. It’s up to $25 million, which is impressive for the Warner Bros’ musical. It would have helped if the Oscar buzz was a tad better, but it’s made more money in its first 2 days than most predicted.
Back at #1 is “Wonka,” which grossed close to $10 million on Tuesday. The film’s a hit — $94 million, so far, domestically and $263 million worldwide. Paul King’s prequel garnered an A on CinemaScore and seems to be well-liked by mainstream audiences.
‘Aquaman 2’ grossed $8 million on Tuesday. The goal, and best case scenario, right now is to outgross “The Marvels” and “The Flash.” Warner Bros did the right thing by dumping this one during the holidays. When all is said and done, ‘Aquaman 2’ now stands a chance at crossing $100 million domestically.
George Clooney’s “The Boys in the Boat” added $3 million last night. Word of mouth might carry it through the holiday season, or it might not. Judging by the scores, audiences seem to like it, but it’s not IP and I’m wondering if it’ll have enough juice to make back its budget, which is said to be north of $40 million.
