Deadline describes Jo Koy as a “preeminent comedian.” He’s been tapped to host the 81st Golden Globe Awards. Pardon my ignorance, but have our readers ever heard of Koy? Maybe he’s a funny guy, I don’t know, but this is such an out of left field pick.
Full disclosure, I haven’t seen last year’s "Easter Sunday," which Koy starred in, and became the first big studio movie with an all-Filipino ensemble. Other than that, he was a frequent panelist on E!'s late night show Chelsea Lately and has a few Netflix specials under his belt.
Maybe It’ll pan out, I’m wishing Jo Koy all the best, but it’s no secret that the Globes we’re struggling to find a host for their January 7 ceremony. A few weeks ago, a report revealed that the Globes were desperately looking for a host to emcee the ceremony. The likes of Chris Rock, Ali Wong, and Will Arnett declined offers to host.
“It’s not worth it,” a top publicist told CNN. “There are a lot of politics. It’s not easy and it’s not fun anymore,” they added. “It’s a thankless job” another publicist chided.
TheWrap’s Steve Pond is reported last week that 64 Globe voters were “threatening to withhold their final ballots after being told that they will not be given tickets to the January 7 ceremony.” The Globes currently have 300 voters, so the boycott would affect a little more than 20% of the voters.
Earlier this year, media conglomerate Penske bought the controversy-ridden Globes. In consequence, they shut down the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
