Last month, I exclusively reported that David Gordon Green was ready to shoot a film called “Nutcrackers.” Deadline has now corroborated my report and added in a few extra details ..
It turns out that Ben Stiller will star in “Nutcrackers,” his first lead role in over six years. Stiller’s last major role was in Mike White’s “Brad’s Status,” released in 2017. Lately, he’s been mostly focusing his attention in directing television, including the acclaimed Apple TV drama “Severance.”
“Nutcrackers,” which started production on November 28, is based on a screenplay by Leland Douglas (“Call of the Wild.”) Further casting details are being kept under wraps. However, we do have a synopsis, via Deadline:
Nutcrackers follows the work-obsessed Mike (Stiller), who must reluctantly travel to rural Ohio to look after his four rambunctious nephews after their parents die in a car accident. What begins as a three-day trip to find foster care turns into weeks of farm-life mayhem – and the realization that he doesn’t need to find them a home, they’ve found one for him.
Shooting on “Nutcrackers” is supposed to wrap up this month. The film will bring Green back to the indie film world as, these last six years, he’s been mostly rebooting horror franchises (‘Halloween,’ ‘Exorcist’) for Blumhouse.
