Alex Garland’s influence on 21st Century sci-fi is undeniable. He wrote Danny Boyle’s “28 Days Later,” and “Sunshine” (2007), and “Dredd” — the latter which he might have also directed?
His ensuing directorial outings have also stamped their footprints on the genre, “Ex-Machina,” and “Annihilation,” especially. His last film, 2022’s “Men” was seen as his first major misstep. Next up for Garland is A24’s “Civil War”, which, Garland has claimed, could be the last film he ever directs.
Garland’s ”Civil War” now has a trailer. It looks incredibly political — pitting States and American factions against each other in an all-out war for the country. Since 2024 is an election year, and promises to be a very turbulent time in the U.S., then there might not be a better time to release this film.
Garland has suggested that “Civil War” is “going to piss a bunch of people off”. One look at the trailer, he might have a point, mission accomplished. In fact, “Civil War” could easily compliment Sam Esmail’s just-released “Leave the World Behind.”
It’s a war film, journalists try to reach the White House as anarchy is seen everywhere they go. Kirsten Dunst plays a war photographer. In between the fighting, an assortment of characters seem to come and go.
“Civil War” stars Dunst, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Jesse Plemons, Nick Offerman, Karl Glusman, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonica T. Gibbs, and Jess Matney.
A24 is releasing “Civil War” in theaters and IMAX everywhere on April 26, 2024. The film is Rated R for strong violent content, bloody/disturbing images, and language throughout.
