Scott Derickson to Direct ‘Black Phone 2’ — Set For June 27, 2025 Release

November 29, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

Scott Derickson’s quasi-independent thriller, “The Black Phone,” just had a sequel greenlit.

According to Deadline, Blumhouse is set to produce “The Black Phone 2,” with Ethan Hawke returning as the villain. We never doubted that this would eventually occur. Hollywood is obssessed with sequels.

The key cast from the first film are all returning for “The Black Phone 2”. That includes Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora. Derrickson will be penning the screenplay with writing partner, C. Robert Cargill.

“Black Phone” followed the story of a young boy who gets abducted by a masked whackjob who traps him in a basement where there’s only a mattress and a black phone. The young boy then starts to get phone calls from the kidnapper’s previous victims.

Released in 2022, Derickson’s film was shot on a shoestring $16 million budget and ended up grossing over $160 million worldwide. It was a good film, a small fever-dream of a thriller that riled up our nerves.

Derrickson’s other directing credits include “Doctor Strange,” “Sinister,” “Deliver Us From Evil” and “The Exorcism of Emily Rose.” He’s also already shot his next film, 2024’s “The Gorge” — last week I posted a test reaction for it.

Blumhouse has dated “The Black Phone 2” for a June 27, 2025 theatrical release.
