So, who’s getting fired for this?
“The Marvels” is tanking at the box office this weekend, falling 80 percent, ranking as Marvel Studios’ worst second-weekend drop of all time, as well as the worst for any Hollywood superhero movie.
Only 17 movies that opened in over 1000+ theaters, have ever hit 80+ percent drops; “The Marvels” now takes its place alongside such gems as “Gigli,” “Halloween Ends,” “Steel,” and that “Friday the 13th” reboot.
“The Marvels” is expected to earn $9 million to $10 million for the weekend, and might actually finish in third place, behind Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving”. These numbers make “The Flash” and ‘Indy 5’ look like massive hits.
Clearly, stars promoting the movie on late night TV didn't help. Brie Larson and her co-stars were all over this week, promoting their movie, hoping that it gets a bump.
The movie cost $273 million. It will most certainly make less than one of the biggest bombs in history, “John Carter” — will it best that movies record as the biggest net loss in the modern-era? It’s way too early to make calculations, but it’s going to be at around $130 million worldwide by Sunday evening.
“The Marvels” is destined to live in infamy as an absolute game changing moment for Marvel and the superhero movie genre. Will Marvel start scrapping some projects? “Deadpool 3” is probably safe, but they have plenty of greenlit MCU movies they look like they could also tank.
