Netflix and Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic “Frankenstein” has been a passion project of del Toro’s since he was a wee boy.
The cast is the real lure of this upcoming film: Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Andrew Garfield and Christoph Waltz are set to star. Consummate actors who will no doubt bring their A-game to this $85 million film.
According to What’s On Netflix, and contrary to rumors, Isaac is not playing the doctor, but rather Garfield will be the scientist, Isaac his monster, and Goth will portray the Bride.
Del Toro confirmed at the tenth-anniversary screening of “Pacific Rim” that the film “starts shooting in February.” Adding, “it’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein.”
After teaming up with Netflix for “Pinocchio” and “Cabinet of Curiosities,” del Toro will again be working with the streaming giant for his long-gestating passion project.
Set in 19th century Eastern Europe, the film is the story of Dr. Pretorious, who needs to track down Frankenstein's monster — who is believed to have died in a fire forty years before — in order to continue the experiments on him.
“The fact is I’ve been dreaming of doing a ‘Frankenstein’ movie since I was a child,” Del Toro told ComingSoon back in 2008. His dream will now be realized.
Del Toro is known to have many collectibles of Boris Karloff as the monster and has been developing this project for over a decade. The closest he got to making the film was in 2018, but soon after Universal Pictures scrapped the entire thing due to their planned monster-verse movies bombing at the box-office.
