While speaking with Variety, promoting “Next Goal Wins”, Taika Waititi stated that his ‘Star Wars’ movie “will be a Taika Waititi film.” He added, “It’s gonna piss people off.”
Why did Kathleen Kennedy hire this guy? Didn’t she isolate and piss off Star Wars fans enough? For 13 years, Kennedy has presided over the Star Wars brand and has bore the wrath of many fanatics.
It used to be that a ‘Star Wars’ movie would be a major event for movie fans worldwide. Now, there’s major pause for concern. What happened? Well, the downfall really started when George Lucas sold the rights to Disney. The mouse house decided to create a trilogy that destroyed the Star Wars myth for many fans, and then they kept milking it with numerous TV shows and spin-offs (remember “Solo”?).
There are plenty of fans who are still upset with how the last trilogy turned out, this has put a major dent on the entire franchise. Star Wars lost many diehards who vowed never to return — they would rather rewatch Lucas’ prequels on repeat.
Hiring Waititi is asking for a death sentence and his gleeful assertion that his ‘Star Wars’ movie will piss people off is not something he should necessarily take comfort in.
There hasn’t been an actual Star Wars movie since 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.” A planned trilogy from ‘The Last Jedi’ director Rian Johnson, originally announced in 2017, has been put in the backburner. Also, a few months back, Star Wars projects from Benioff/Weiss, Kevin Feige and Patty Jenkins were nixed by LucasFilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy.
As it stands, the best Star Wars movie since Kennedy took control of the ship was also the one that was the biggest production headache for Disney, that would be Gareth Edwards’ “Rogue One.”
