Golden Globes Still Have No TV Deal: “No One Wants to Pay For It”

October 9, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

The Golden Globes are 90 days away, taking place on January 7. 2024, and there is still no deal for a TV broadcast. Nobody wants to broadcast them.

Showbiz411’s Roger Friedman now has an insider telling him, “No one wants to pay for it.” Until a couple of years ago, NBC had been paying millions in licensing fees.

This weekend, Friedman confirmed that even with all their good efforts, the Globes still haven’t reached a deal to broadcast the January 7th show. “Whoever does it, the money is not there like it used to be,” said his source.

A Puck report in the summer had mentioned that no network wanted to air the Globes. The awards show has now become too toxic to broadcast. CBS, Fox, Netflix, Amazon, ABC/Disney+/Hulu, Apple, Turner and Roku all reportedly passed on airing the 2024 show.

The Golden Globes are lost. Last month, they added two unnecessary categories. The first one being Best Box Office Hit. To qualify for this category a movie must have made over $150 million worldwide, $100 million domestically. So, basically, “Barbie” vs “Oppenheimer.” Clearly a desperate attempt at ratings.

This announcement comes on the heels of last Friday’s ouster of three voting members. Munawar Hosain, Aniko Navai and Howaida Hamdy — the latter was caught publishing antisemitic rhetoric on social media. No reason was given for the dismissal of the other two.

How about instead of adding categories, which was a desperate attempt at ratings, the Globes promises to bring back Ricky Gervais as host, then maybe there could be an audience actually willing this watch this irrelevant awards show. The reason why Gervais was such a great host was because he kept hammering on about how irrelevant the whole show was.
